ChatGPT is expanding its reach to mobile devices. OpenAI recently revealed the introduction of a new official iOS application, enabling users to conveniently access its renowned AI chatbot while on the move. This release comes after a period in which the App Store became saturated with questionable unofficial alternatives.

The ChatGPT app for iOS is built on GPT-3.5, just like the original web model, and offers a free version for users. However, if you want access to the most capable persona built on GPT-4, you can subscribe to ChatGPT Plus for $20 a month. OpenAI plans to expand the availability of the mobile app to other countries in the coming weeks, and an Android version is also in the works.

One of the most significant updates in the mobile incarnation of ChatGPT is the addition of Whisper, OpenAI’s speech recognition system. Whisper is known for its “human-level robustness and accuracy” in English, which means you can now talk to the chatbot instead of just typing. The application also enables seamless synchronization of your chat history between your computer and mobile device, allowing you to seamlessly continue conversations from where you left off. However, please note that the iOS version of ChatGPT is only compatible with phones running the iOS 16.1 operating system.

It’s worth mentioning that Apple has strict content moderation policies in its App Store. This raises questions about whether ChatGPT will have the same freewheeling personality in the iOS app as it does on OpenAI’s website.  Apple’s content moderation policies might influence the behavior of ChatGPT in the app.

Regarding the delay in releasing the iOS app, OpenAI’s spokesperson Kayla Wood explains that it aligns with their approach of slowly and safely deploying useful AI tools. OpenAI aims to ensure safe AI development and takes user feedback into account to train and improve its algorithms. The iOS version of ChatGPT could provide valuable new queries and a more conversational tone through the speech recognition function.

The mobile app also presents new opportunities for OpenAI, such as gathering location data. However, Apple has implemented data collection restrictions for third-party apps in recent years, prioritizing user privacy. This could impact the amount of data OpenAI can collect from the ChatGPT iOS app.

Whether you’re looking for advice, conversation, or creative inspiration, ChatGPT is ready to assist you wherever you go. Stay tuned for further updates on the availability of the app in other countries and the release of the Android version. OpenAI continues to push the boundaries of AI development, and the ChatGPT app is just the beginning.
